Post Are turrets supposed to fire on stealths or not?
People keep telling me different things regarding this. I, personally, find that I can literally waltz through a lineup of turrets without so much as a single one moving. Some other people tell me that the turrets shoot them dead even with stealth on. Others say it depends on how close you are to them. Even MiniRavens don't fire on me when I'm stealthed, whereas I've seen them pick off stealths in the building that I'm repairing that I wasn't even aware of.

Jeez, could someone clear this up?

They seem to randomly detect me- I'll run into a base, with no problems, only to suddenly find that every single turret has suddenly decided to see me, and I'm pretty much screwed.

Seems random IMO.

This just shows that it has a 16/255 per 4 tics chance of firing on a stealth trooper from a distance and a 128/255 chance when close.
But then the Voltcode somehow made it so they sometimes fire on team mates.

Stealth = Invisible

So why should the turrets see an Invisible soldier? Unless he's shooting at them...

Turrets use infrared anyway. That's why there's thermal cloaking in addition to optical cloaking.

They're not supposed to be absolute detectors, however.

Otherwise, what's the fucking point of stealth?

And yes, I am going to be arguing this point to death. Stealth might be disliked by some, but it is one of the best ways of ensuring you have a fair game.

As am I. Turrets aren't supposed to see stealth, only if you get too close.

Well, I don't dislike stealth. I'm fine with turrets not seeing stealth, but if that stealth is firing on them it would be more reasonable to have them defend themselves, no? Sure, if they unstealthed and the turrets fired (which they do) it is fair. When you're firing at them from 5 feet away while you're plainly visible, shouldn't the turret do something?

Build more than one turret 8-)


... and the turret DOES fire. Its just, that you have an advantage with the Laser Rifle. When you fire at it with Stealth Sniper Rifle. It will fire for sure.

The other turrets don't fire at him either.

And no, it doesn't? Even I've done it, just walked right up to a mob of turrets, fired at one, and not a single one reacted. But lol, whatev. At least I know now.

You're asking a bit more than what is really reasonable to ask of the coders. DECORATE by its very nature is extremely messy and a pain to deal with - almost everything done with it is hacky as hell.

This, especially so, because it will require using inventory items and tracking conditional statements which will take a lot of time and resources to do correctly.

Stealth when shoot still remain in stealth mode even if visible so, if it's possible, make it change when it shots.

I think that automatic turrets use infrared vision as well as normal vision. If the target can't be seen via normal view, then it checks the infrared view. However, the infrared vision is most likely short-range, so if a stealth gets close enough, THAT's when it should fire.

If anyone is confused by what ds201/Nightfall is posting, what it comes down to is this:

The very first thing it does, is it checks if the player has stealth - and if they do, it will then follow this flow of events:

- Then it has 16/256 (that is, 1 in 16 chance) to attack a player, regardless of stealth or distance.

- If the player is within 128 units, it will always engage the player no matter what.

So there you have it. Come within 128 units, you're toast. Otherwise, you have a 6-7% chance of being attacked every time it "sees" you.
