Are the gray background bits in the new HUD supposed to be translucent in software rendering mode? They aren't for me. I can't see through them and they block a good bit of the screen. I noticed that they are translucent in OpenGL mode.

Are you using Windows? If so:
]vid_hw2d true
This doesn't work in Linux I believe as this function uses DirectX IIRC.

Unfortunately the translucency code in Windows uses Direct3D acceleration and as such is not available in Posix systems. You could try WinE'ing the Windows version of Skulltag for it but attempting that will slow things down quite a bit.
