Are the gray background bits in the new HUD supposed to be translucent in software rendering mode? They aren't for me. I can't see through them and they block a good bit of the screen. I noticed that they are translucent in OpenGL mode.

Are you using Windows? If so:

]vid_hw2d true

This doesn't work in Linux I believe as this function uses DirectX IIRC.

Unfortunately the translucency code in Windows uses Direct3D acceleration and as such is not available in Posix systems. :( You could try WinE'ing the Windows version of Skulltag for it but attempting that will slow things down quite a bit.
