Well, it brings to case the idea that the standard sniper as he is has become more or less.... obsolete. Really. You can't deny it. It's hardly used anymore because people play closerange all the time (because it's most often more fun) and the maps encourage that. Players have figured out how to rofl any sniper. People often aim just as well with Gauss and other weapons at range, and they can easily locate then stealthknife/laser/chainsaw/plasmacannon them. Not to mention, sniper rifles don't hit quite as hard as a gauss rifle and certainly have a pretty low damage per second. Doesn't really help that they're slower now, either.

Yeah. This is my experience both being snipers and killing snipers nowadays.

And honestly, people do like their stealth classes. I personally think it'd be fun and give AOW a bit of a breath of fresh air. Hopefully there will be more creative redesignings of classes in AOW, even if to just make them fresh again. Remember those old days when all of us and all of the players were so psyched for each update, because they did more than nerf this or buff that, or fix this bug or whatever. It was because there were new and cool things to play around with and try out, relearning the game.

TL;DR Any publicity is good publicity. If we're to keep the long term interest of the community and bring in new players as well we are going to have to start coming up with some original content.

Maps have a huge effect on this. Usually bigger maps don't have much cover, so everyone from the enemy team can spot you while moving to a good place for a stealth sniper. It's an interesting idea, but judging by the maps I don't think players will find it much useful.

That's where good old stealth skills come in. A good player can sneak around without the help of a cloak. This mechanism is still better than no cloak at all, really, since once you find your happy little spot to snipe from, you can take all the time you want to line up your shots before firing. With a normal sniper, well basically, if you can see them, they can easily see you, and since you're only the most effective and accurate while standing still, you're basically a sitting target. Add that to the fact that you always need at least two shots in a row to kill someone, and you have a pretty disadvantaged class.

Once you find your favourite place, you can be still and focus on your aim before firing instead of worrying if they're gonna see you first or if some random stealth is going to chainsaw you in the back. Yes it does depend on the map, but overall this makes him a bit more flexible. And still more expensive than a Commando or an Orca, which are usually more effective overall anyway.


Short version: Yeah some people can play Sniper somewhat effectively despite the maps, though they're still limited in use since gauss and other things like orcas fullfill the role pretty much just as good or better. This makes them less predictable, yet not an unstoppable super fast invisible guy who only turns visible for .5 seconds whenever he shoots and is completely undetectable otherwise.

I liked the old stealth sniper. It was really fun to either (a) become a non-stealth sniper and counter-snipe because they stayed in one place or (b) stealth trooper from behind. What wasn't so fun is that they just wouldn't die. So maybe reduce their armor to the point where a stealth sniper dies from a single sniper shot. Then they would actually have to displace every time they fire a shot, or be discovered. Then regular snipers would still have a use too, because it takes two shots to kill them.
