I had heard that discussed before but someone said the game was never good enough to warrant tournament play.

I would actually really like loosely organized tournament play. I believe that would provide a balanced challenge that will not end in one team completely dominating the other.

Yes, and AOW priv was also tried. There wasn't enough interest.

Why was there not enough interest?

1. AOW priv was supposed to be played by skill players, not spammers, so only 5% of the AOW playerbase could be invited to priv.
2. Your average european competitive player doesn't give a shit about AOW because of its lack of ballance, and they got used to good ole CTF.
3. Even when you get enough players for priv, all of them are skilled, so the matches are endless and it starts to get boring, so on each priv there would be less and less players untill it dies.

This was pretty much the big reason why it died.

Also, priv settings were different from public, and a lot of players didn't like that. After a few runs at it, ultimately interest was lost in priv, although in theory it sounds much better.

As for tournaments well.... we've been there. Twice in fact. Both times were a failure ultimately due to lack of available players. The timezones is what really ended it. Nobody was really dedicated enough and during the first attempt, nobody had IRC, and during the second attempt, not enough showed up on IRC.

As the person who attempted to run these tournaments I highly advise against trying it again. It's a massive headache for nothing that will get nowhere.

Oh right it was 50 tickets from the start of the game right? I remember joining such a server and thinking "European style is harsh, I'm leaving."
